COURSE IN CLOWNING
This clowning course is lead and taught by Bruno Zühlke. It is intended to give all interested parties a deeper insight into the world of the clown. The focus is on each participant discovering and developing their own, individual clown. Using personal characteristics as a starting point, each participant will journey looking for the comic and strange sides of their person, their own clown. Each individual's own language, way of moving, voice, strengths and weaknesses are points to orientate us on this quest.
Participants get to know and experience the most important principles of clownesque play and performance: in doing this, the focus is on how we deal with failure as the basis for the clown's actions. Moreover, we tackle questions such as: what does it mean to stand on stage as a clown in front of an audience? And – how can I make people laugh or cry? Answering these questions leads into the issues of: authentic play and performance, wakefulness and (stage) presence, and to the questions of your own individual originality, and the comic and tragic aspects of your personality. This journey into your own clown is based on improvisation. Participants get to know and practice the basics of improvisation in theater. Working on your own clown 'figure' in combination with clowning and slapstick techniques build from this improvisation work. To round things off, the whole process concludes in a public performance.

The individual modules
Module 1: Clownesque play and performance. Wednesday until Sunday, May 4-8, 2016
In this first section of our clown course, we will dig down into the fundamentals of clownesque play: joy in play, presence on the stage, wakefulness, and relating with the audience. And we will be dealing with these questions: how can I, as clown, make people laugh or cry? On top of that, we'll be working with the phenomena of fiascos – or rather, playful ways of dealing with disaster.
Module 2: The clown and improvisation. Wednesday until Sunday, June 8-12, 2016
It is through improvisation that the clown discovers her/himself and the world. S/he encounters life in an open and unprejudiced way. And it's in this module that we learn the basics of clownesque improvisation. Which opens doors to an infinite number of new ideas and stories. Free improvisation facilitates moments of creativity for us.
Module 3: The clownesque figure and the object. Wednesday until Sunday, 06-10 July, 2016
We develop the clownish figure step-for-step using each individual's own way of moving. We find out which idiosyncrasies this figure has, its comic side and its tragic side. The figure's originality becomes clearer in the process of relating to objects. Clowning and slapstick techniques broaden our performance repertoire.
Module 4: The Clown and the stage. Saturday and Sunday, August 20-28, 2016
The participants develop their own clown theater production out of their experiences in the education program. This then climaxes in a public performance at the end of the week. Starting with the initial idea, developing through improvisations and training, until these processes bear fruit in individual numbers/scenes: these steps will be worked through together. Solo, duo and group 'numbers' are all elements of this production.
